Group Seeks To Boost Ballet Interest Here

A group of local citizens has formed the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet to increase public interest in this art with the aim of establishing here a permanent group of ballet dancers.

Auditions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at 603 E. Liberty St.

One of the aims of the organization is to bring a professional ballet program to Ann Arbor annually.

Director of ballet is Sylvia Hamer (Mrs. Ellsworth Hamer), who has been teaching ballet in Ann Arbor for 25 years. Co-directors are Mrs. Richard C. Miller of Ann Arbor and Mrs. Marjorie Russell of Ypsilanti.

Aims Described

Purpose of the organization is described as follows:

1) To bring a professional ballet program to Ann Arbor annually;

2) To provide an opportunity for local ballet dancers to continue with professional lessons and to participate in ballet programs for the public;

3) To provide accomplished ballet dancers for programs for local groups;

4) To be a civic nonprofit organization, to supply a need in the community, dedicated to the advancement of Ann Arbor’s cultural assets;

5) To develop an organization for the promotion, education and extension of the ballet.

Chairman Listed

Chairman of the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet committee is Mrs. Leonard E. Himler. Mrs. W. T. Anicka is secretary, Joseph Hammer, treasurer and business manager; Mrs. Henry de Koning, public relations; Mrs. Glenn D. McGeoch and Mrs. Geraldine Seeback, music directors; and Myrl Underwood, organization advisor.

Patrons are Mrs. Clarence Crook, Mrs. Louis Fead, Mrs. Paul Haller, Mrs. Joseph Hammer, Mrs. D. W. Martin, Mrs. Reed Nesbit, Mrs. Edward Page, Mrs. H. Marvin Pollard and Mrs. Harry Towsley.

Sylvia Hamer, director, has studied ballet in London, Paris and Rome. She danced with the Albertina Rasch Ballet Co. in New York for 2 1/2 years. She holds a centuriate membership with The Imperial Society of London, one of 10 such memberships in the U. S.

Studied In New York

Mrs. Miller, co-director, has studied in the School of American Ballet in New York. She has taught dancing in Dearborn and Brighton for several years.

Mrs. Russell, co-chairman, also studied ballet in New York and toured with the San Carlos Ballet Co. At the present time she conducts a ballet school in Ypsilanti.
