24 Puerto Rican Teachers At U-M For Year Of Study

Twenty-four Puerto Rican teachers arrived in Ann Arbor this morning to spend a year here to study at the University methods of teaching English and to become more familiar with American customs and history.

Right now their biggest problem is finding a place to live.

Ann Arbor is in the midst of a housing rush not unusual for this
time of year, with the U-M starting classes next week.

Officials of the English Language Institute at the University hope that the visitors can find rooms in typical American homes. It is felt that this contact with the American people helps achieve the objectives of the program which sends the teachers here at the expense of the Puerto Rican government.

The group at the U-M represents about one-fourth of some 00 Puerto Rican teachers who are visiting the U. S. on one-year scholarships.

The University was chosen as one of primary places of training, The English Language Institute specializes in the training of teachers to teach English as a foreign language.

It is directed by Prof. Robert Lado and was founded by Prof. Charles C. Fries.

The Puerto Rican teachers, most of them 25 years or older, have been teaching in Puerto Rico. Many of them are elementary teachers.

Courses in the structure of English composition and cultural and historical studies will make up the major portion of their academic program at the U-M. They will be enrolled in regular courses and will receive regular academic credit.
