Youngsters In Contest
To Design City Flag

A city flag design contest is
getting under way for all school
students in Ann Arbor in grades
7 through 12. First prize is to be
$20, and there are to be two $5
honorable mention awards.

Details of the contest plans,
formulated at the administra-
tion level, were outlined at the
City Council meeting last night
by Councilwoman Alicia Dwyer,
who proposed some time ago
that the city should have a flag.

The matter was referred last
October to the administration
for work on details and con-
tacts with school authorities.

Council members last night,
however, pointed out that a de-
sire was for incorporation of
the present city seal into flag
designs, rather for development
of a new seal as discussed in
instructions prepared for distri-
bution at the schools.

The instructions also state
that the city has no motto.
Mayor Samuel J. Eldersveld,
referring to information from
City Clerk Fred J. Looker, said
last night, however, that the
city's motto is "Where Com-
merce and Education Meet."

The contest instructions point
out that city colors to be in-
corporated in the flag designs
are white, black and gold.

Entries on 14 x 18-inch draw-
ing boards are to be submitted
to school art teachers or art
departments by noon on Mon-
day, April 13.

Contest judges are to include
Ann Arbor Board of Education
members, University art in-
structors and the City Council
members.

Winners are to be announced
within 30 days after the contest
closes. Awards are to be made
at a City Council meeting.
