Police Force Adds Five Members

The appointment of four new patrolmen and the return from army service of a fifth officer has filled the 78-person complement of the Ann Arbor Police Department for the first time in more than a year, Chief Casper M. Enkemann announced today.

Returning to duty after two years’ service with a military police unit in Germany is Ronald L. Ritter, 24, of Plymouth. Officer Ritter joined the local force on March 26, 1956, and resigned to enter the Army on March 1, 1958. He returned to active duty as a patrolman today and fills the vacancy on the department left by the resignation last month of Patrolman Ben Ball who retired after more than 35 years’ service as a policeman.

The four newly-appointed officers, who recently completed a four-week training course, include Phillip E. Kearney, 24, of Northville, Harry C. Kerr,

24, of 605 Howley Ct., Herbert C. McGuire, 22, of 1201 Miller Ave., and Robert T. LeVanseler, 25, of South Lyon.

Officer Kearney was graduated in 1954 from Northville High School and attended Concord College at Athens, W. Va., and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. He worked in the recreation department of Nankin township in Wayne county and also for the Evans Products Co. in Plymouth before being appointed to the local department. Kearney is single.

Patrolman Kerr was graduated in 1953 from Ann Arbor High School and attended Michigan State University, Wittenburg College at Springfield, O., and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Before his ap-

pointment as an officer, he was employed at the Ann Arbor Federal Savings & Loan Association here. He is married.

Officer McGuire is a 1955 graduate of Forest Park High School in Crystal Falls, Mich. He joined the U. S. Air Force upon graduation. He completed four years with the Air Force and was appointed a patrolman here after his discharge. McGuire is single.

Patrolman LeVanseler was graduated in 1952 from South Lyon High School where he was outstanding on football and baseball teams. He served as a military police officer in the Army and later worked at the Western Electric Co. in Detroit and as a part-time police officer in South Lyon. LeVanseler is single.
