Yamagima Named Reserve Colonel
Yamagiwa Named Reserve Colonel Promotion to full colonel of Joseph K. Yamagiwa, Ann Arbor Reservist, was announced today by the Sixth U. S. Army Corps. Col. Yamagiwa is professor of Japanese and chairman of the department of Far Eastern languages and literatures at the University of Michigan. He is also acting director of the U-M Center for Japanese Studies. He joined the U-M staff in 1930. During World Yamagiwa War II, Col. Yamagiwa was variously educational director of the Army's "Intensive Japanese Language Course," language supervisor for the East Asian Army Specialized Training Program and for the Civil Affairs Training Program, and director of the translation program for the Office of the Provost Marshal General-all on the U-M campus. He also served in Washington and Tokyo as research analyst for the Strategic Bombing Survey of the War Department. His postwar Army Reserve activities involve Department of the Army projects.
