E. R. Muehlig Dies At 83

Hardware Owner Was City Native

Edward R. Muehlig, 83, owner of the Muehlig and Lanphear Hardware Store at 311 S. Main St. and a lifelong resident of Ann Arbor, died suddenly last night at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a week's illness. His home was at 801 W. Liberty St.

Mr. Muehlig was born on Dec. 24, 1876, in Ann Arbor, a son of John and Amelia Volz Muehlig. He and Lydia W. Guenther of Ann Arbor were married on Sept. 24, 1903. She survives.

He started in the hardware business here at the Muehlig and Schmid Hardware, located at 205 S. Main St., in 1888. In 1929, Mr. Muehlig and the late O. Don Lanphear bought the business from an uncle, Edwin Muehlig, and moved it to its present location.

Mr. Muehlig bought out the Lanphear interest in 1947.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had served the church council for more than 25 years.

Mr. Muehlig was a life member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge, No. 159, F&AM.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, including two sons, Erwin W. Muehlig, who was associated with his father in the hardware store, and Robert E.

Muehlig of the Muehlig Funeral Home; four grandchildren, Kathleen C., Carol A., Linda D., and Gary R., all of Ann Arbor.

Funeral services for Mr. Muehlig will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Muehlig Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph B. Piper officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
