Prof. Hall Honored For His Service To Japanese People Prof. Robert B. Hall of the University's geography department, has been cited for “devoted and outstanding service" to the people of Japan. He received a Certificate of Merit from the Association for Japan-United States Amity and Trade Centennial, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the exchange and ratification of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. The treaty, which opened Japan to modern trade, followed the landing of Commodore Perry a century ago. The engraved personal citation is accompanied by a lacquer print of Perry's ship approaching its landing, painted in the style of traditional Japanese art. Prof. Hall, who returned to the U-M last fall after serving five years as director of Asia Foundation work in Japan, has a long history of service in the Far Eastern country. He holds the Order of the Rising Sun, highest decoration granted by the Japanese government to a foreigner.
