Mother Mary Carmelita, Co-Organizer Of Hospital Here, Dies At Age 74
Mother Mary Carmelita Manning, 74, one of four Sisters of Mercy who came to Ann Arbor in the summer of 1911 to organize St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, died yesterday at the hospital. JAN 2 2 1961
She was the founder of Mercy College and Our Lady of Mercy High School, Detroit.
From 1922-27 she was administrator of the local hospital. At the time of her death she was serving as consultant at Mercywood Sanitarium here.
Mother Mary Carmelita became a member of the Sisters of Mercy, a Roman Catholic religious order of nuns, in 1909 in Dubuque, Ia.
She served as mother provincial of the Detroit province of the order from 1940-46 and from 1952-55. She also was a director of Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital, Detroit, and in 1955 was named one of Detroit's women of distinction.
In 1952 Mother Mary Carmelita was awarded the tri-state key from the Michigan Hospital Association. Ten years earlier she had received the distinguished service cross from the National Catholic Hospital Association.
Survivors include a brother, Jeremiah Manning of Beresford, S. D., and four sisters, Sister Mary Benigna of Dubuque, Ia., Mrs. John P. O'Connor and Mrs. Dennis Fitzgerald, both of Ann Arbor, and Mrs. Esther Mangan of Beresford, S. D.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Scholastica Church, Detroit.
