Glenn D. Gosling, head of the University of California Press paperback and trade book division, yesterday was appointed director of the University of Michigan Press by the U-M Board of Regents at its meeting here.
He will fill a vacancy left by the resignation by former director Fred D. Wieck on Oct. 31 of last year.
Gosling, 52, is a native of Allegan county, Mich. He received two degrees from the U-M in 1931, a bachelor of arts in February of that year and a master of arts in August. Two years later, he earned a bachelors degree from Oxford University, England, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
He taught writing and English literature at Olivet College from 1934-41 and since then has been connected with book publishing. Gosling was with the Henry Holt Co. from 1941 to 1950, with an interruption of 51 months for military service during World War II.
He was senior editor of the Holt trade department from 1948 until he left in 1950 to open the Los Angeles office of the University of California Press. After establishing the office with five editors, he was placed in charge of the paperback and trade book section at Berkeley in August, 1956.
