MacDonald Plans To Buy Saginaw Radio Station

Kenneth H. MacDonald manager of radio station WPAG has agreed to purchase radio station WSAM and WSAM-FM in Saginaw, subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission.

MacDonald and his family have been Ann Arbor residents since 1947 when he joined WPAG as an announcer. He has been he station’s sales manager for the past 12 years.

The Saginaw station is owned by the Knorr Broadcasting Co. of Dearborn and has been on the air since 1939.

MacDonald said it will be six or eight weeks before the FCC takes action on the sales agreement. If approved, MacDonald will then leave Ann Arbor to assume active management of the station. His wife, Ann, and their six children, will move to Saginaw at a later date.

A graduate of Newton (Mass.) High School and of Lelend Powers Speech and Drama School, Boston, MacDonald worked for the National Broadcasting System in New York and appeared in the original Broadway production of “Junior Miss.”

From 1942-47 he served as a Navy pilot during World War II.

Active in civic affairs, MacDonald has served on the board of directors of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and as president of the Ann Arbor Civic Theater which twice named him outstanding actor of the year. He played leading roles in the Civic Theater productions of “Mister Roberts,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Laura,” Holiday” and others.

MacDonald has been active with the Ann Arbor United Fund for 12 years. He served on its board of directors for seven years and served as president and chairman of the board for two successive years.

He now is a member of the Michigan United Fund board and a member of its admissions committee.

MacDonald also is a member of the Washtenaw county Red Cross executive committee; a member of the board of directors of Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County; vice-president of the Washtenaw Sales Executive Club; and president of the Ann Arbor Investment Club.

He has served as a member of the Washtenaw County Republican Committee and as chairman of the City Republican Committee.
