Tim Ryan Named Pioneer Ice Coach

The “Old Fox” still is ready to try something new.

Ann Arbor High’s Tim Ryan, dean of Michigan’s high school track coaches, is taking on a new assignment in hockey.

The Board of Education last night approved the appointment of Ryan, Pioneer track coach since 1926, as coach of the newly-created Ann Arbor High hockey team.

One of the most respected coaches in the state for many years, Ryan has been coaching both indoor and outdoor track for 36 years and cross-country for many of those years.

Born in Dunmore, Ont., Ryan was a goalie on the St. Francis Xavier College team.

In the last dozen years, Ryan’s track teams have won four Six-A meets, placed second twice and have been second in the state once and third twice.

Ryan expects hockey to become a popular sport at the school. He will draw most of his talent from those who have been playing in the leagues of the Ann Arbor Hockey Association.

He picked up the nickname “Old Fox” among state coaching colleagues during his long career.

Ryan will be assisted with the hockey coaching chores by two varsity hockey players from the University who will be doing their student teaching under the veteran mentor.
