Two Local Teams Will Find It Hard To Improve On '62
By Mike Tressler Ann Arbor's three prep football coaches should be in complete agreement on at least one point before the first day of practice even starts:
University High Coach Herb Deromedi has the easiest job of the three when it comes to improving on last year's record. The Cubs, which ended last season with a 2-5-1 record, need only to win three games to come out with a better mark. But, true to the old maxim, just about the only place either Ann Arbor High or St. Thomas High can go is down.
It will be a monumental task for either Ann Arbor coach Jay Stielstra or veteran St. Thomas mentor Leo Wagner to improve on their 1962 records.
Stielstra guided the Pioneers to a perfect 8-0 record, the Six-A League title and the mythical Class A state championship. St. Thomas swept to eight straight wins and the championship of the Southwest League before bowing to powerful Ferndale St. James in the Second Division title game.
But it's time to put past records aside and concentrate on the fast-approaching 1963 season.
Medical examinations and the distribution of equipment are on tap at all three schools this week.
Ann Arbor returnees and prospective players will take their physical exams from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow and continue from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday. Mouthpiece fittings will be conducted from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday. Distribution of equipment will follow a 9 a.m. Saturday meeting. U High trainees will be fitted for mouthpieces, a requirement of the state, at 2 p.m. Friday at Ann Arbor High and physicals will be taken at U High on Saturday morning.
Both Ann Arbor and U High begin practice on Monday and continue two-a-day workouts for the first week.
St. Thomas has its first game later than the other two schools and will get a later start on the practice field. The Irish will meet for the first time on Monday for medical exams and issuing of equipment.
Mike Collin, a former Cub quarterback, will give Deromedi a hand this season and basketball boss Jim Nicholson will coach the Irish line as Wagner's assistant.
New face on the Pioneer coach who is also varsity baseball C Budzik and basketball boss. Ed Stielstra.
