Deputy Revives Man In Ambulance

A part-time sheriff’s deputy Saturday nighty revived a man who had stopped breathing en route to a hospital.

Lawrence Straits of Milan, a deputy with the Sheriff’s Department, responded with other officers to a call to US-23 near Carpenter Rd. in Pittsfield Township. Donald A. Whitaker, 28, of near Pinckney, had been found by passing motorists lying face down on the shoulder of the road.

Whitaker was placed in an ambulance, and Straits was assigned to accompany him to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. En route to the hospital Whitaker stopped breathing and Straits, using a respirator, revived him.

At the hospital doctors were unable to determine immediately the extent of Whitaker’s injuries or illness.
