John R. Henderson, owner of Henderson Ford Sales, Inc., in Ann Arbor, escaped with his wife and three children from this fire which swept through their Ann Arbor Township home about 6 a.m. today. The top picture shows part of the extensive damage to the front entrance of the house located at 4091 Thorn Oaks Dr. Henderson was awakened by the odor of smoke in the house and aroused his wife, Ruth, and their children, Lew, 15, Lynne, 5, and Jimmy, 8. They fled the house moments before a furnace in the one-story house blew up in a burst of flame. Ann Arbor Township Fire Chief Robert Braun, lower photo, checks the furnace which he says was defective and caused the fire. More than 30 firemen from Ann Arbor and Superior Township volunteer departments poured thousands of gallons of water on the flames before bringing it under control. Unofficial estimates place the damage at $30,000.
