Wolverine Notes

By Wayne DeNeff

LEXINGTON, Ky.—"Vander-
'bilt can hurt you in many
--ways, said Michigan Coach
Dave Strack as he looked ahead
to tonight's game with the
Commodores. "You don't win
the Southeastern Conference
championship without a good
basketball team."

Some are calling No. 1 ranked
Michigan a heavy favorite
against No. 5 ranked Vander-
bilt but others expect the Com-
modores will be playing an
improved game after their close
call with DePaul last night.

The Commodores might have
been looking ahead.

Vanderbilt, with a record of
24-3, features an All-America,
Clyde Lee, who is averaging
20.6 points per game. Lee says
he'd rather rebound than score!

Russell Scores
When Needed

Cazzie Russell scored only
14 points against Dayton last
night but Coach Dave Strack
isn't worried and Dayton
Coach Mickey Donoher was
impressed with the All-Amer-
ica's play even if he was 10
points below his average.

"Cazzie was getting them
early in the game when it
was tight," said Strack, who
also pointed out that the
Michigan offense was fea-
turing Bill Buntin and the
front line men.

"They didn't need Cazzie
tonight or he'd been in there
scoring," said Donoher.
"He's that kind of guy."

and he faces his season's big-
gest challenge against Michi-
gan.

At forwards, the Commodores
have a fine scorer in the 6-7
Bob Grace and a topnotch re-
bound man in the 6-4 Wayne
Taylor. Working in Lee's shad-
ow, Grace has been called the
"most underrated player in the
Southeastern Conference." Anr1
Taylor, the Commodores' "un
sung hero."

Vanderbilt is especially well-
fortified at the guards with
John Ed Miller and Keith
Thomas, 6-0 and 6-3 respective-

ly. Miller is the team leader
and Thomas a solid shooter
with an average of more than
.500.

"We'll have to rebound better
than we did tonight, or we'll be
in trouble with Michigan," said
Vanderbilt Coach Bob Skinner,
in reviewing the 83-78 overtime
victory over DePaul.

The Blue Demons won the
battle of the boards, 47-42.

As the No. 1 ranked team in
the nation, the Wolverines are
celebrities wherever they go
and are constantly sought by
youthful autograph hunters.
The youngsters of the bluegrass
country are no exception.

Skinner won the flip of the
coin against Strack which
means that Vanderbilt will
wear the home white suits
against Michigan. Last night,
Michigan was the home team
against Dayton and wore white.

Michigan stands 12-0 while
playing in the whites and 10-3
while playing in its darkerj
suits.

The great interest here in
the Michigan team was demon-1
strated in the pregame warmup
in the University of Kentucky's
Memorial coliseum when the
fans jammed around the Mich-!
igan end of the court to watch
the Wolverines go through their
drills.

Twenty-five members of the
Michigan band are here and, in
addition to making the Michi-
gan fans feel at home, they en-
tertained the Kentuckians with
some of their rousing c""-'-i
numbers'at the half and ...in
the game.

Michigan's shooting average
against Dayton was .471 on 47
baskets on 87 shots while Day-
ton shot .440 on 33 of 75.
o——o

It was a disappointing night
for Dayton students who pa-
raded around the court in a

; i' .il atmosphere carrying;

s such as "We will!
ismasn Cazzie!", "Who's afraid!
of the big, bad Wolves?",!
"Mash-Mich," "Stay Tough!"
o——o

In comparing Vanderbilt with

a Big Ten team, Strack said the
Commodores are most like Illi-
nois. He referred to Vander-
bilt's Lee as a center who might
be compared to Illinois' Skip
Thoren.

o——o

Michigan's regulars went out
in the following order last
night: Oliver Darden. 14:35
(Jim Myers in); Gee ney,
11:54 (John Thorni •-••" in);

Larry Tregoning, 11:00 (Craig
Dill in); Bill Buntin, 7:11 (John
Clawson in); and Cazzie Rus-
sell, 6:00 (Tom Ludwig in).
o——o

The errors were even—12 for
Michigan and 12 for Dayton.
o——o

One of the things that helped
make it easy for Michigan last
night was its low rate of per-
sonal fouls—just eight. In no
other game have the Wolver-
ines fouled so seldom.

sor ial touls—.)ust eight. In no
other game have the Wolver-
ines fouled so seldom.
