Dr. Morris D. Mackoy, 84, an Ann Arbor practicing dentist and instructor-emeritus of the University's School of Dentistry, died unexpectedly Tuesday on his way to his office. He lived at 619 E. University.
Dr. Mackoy, a one-time member of the U-M varsity baseball team, received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Valparaiso College in Indiana, before coming to Ann Arbor.
He received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the U-M School of Dentistry in 1903.
After practicing dentistry in Port Huron until 1907, he returned to Ann Arbor to join the U-M faculty and set up a private practice.
Dr. William R. Mann, dean of the U-M School of Dentistry, said of Dr. Mackoy today that "I would say he was one of the older generation of dental teachers who contributed greatly to the teaching of clinical dentistry at this school.
"He was a kindly man who was well liked by students, faculty, and alumni."
Dr. Mackoy retired from the U-M School of Dentistry faculty in 1950 after 43 years of service. In bestowing the emeritus title on him in August, 1951, the University's Board of Regents said:
"His colleagues and his students alike have prized the kindness, modesty and constant helpfulness of his character which have endeared him to many members of the school and of the University community."
Dr. Mackoy had devoted full time to private practice from the time of his retirement from the U-M faculty until the time of his death. His offices were at 225 E. Liberty since 1916.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church and of the Psi Omega Dental fraternity. He was a life member of the American Dental Association and the Michigan State Dental Society. He also was a member of Fraternity Lodge No. 262, F&AM of Ann Arbor, and of the M Club.
Dr. Mackoy was born on July 8, 1881, in Siloma, Ky., a son of William H. and Cora Davis Mackoy.
He is survived by a nephew, Richard Mackoy of Scotts Bluff, Neb.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Muehlig Chapel, with the Rev. Kendall Cowing officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home.
