Snowfall Qreeted With Joy (And Salt)

At last!

Even parents who had to rive weren’t grumbling too much this morning as Christmas sleds finally were given a workout by jubilant little children and their mothers.

Those who had to drive encountered slop, slush and salt at only a few slippery spots. “The roads are in a mess,” said Howard Minier at 11 a.m., but they aren’t dangerous.”

Minier, engineer-manager of the Washtenaw County Road commission, said county crews were more than ready for the inch or more of snow that began to blanket the area at about 2 a.m. Commission trucks and equipment were prepared late last night for possible sleet, which fortunately failed to materialize. They started on the snow instead at 3 a.m., and conditions never were close to being out of hand.

Public Works Supt. Fred Mammel said Ann Arbor City Crews were clearing and salting streets during the morning, but “things are pretty well under control.” Mammel said his office had received no reports of slippery spots on city streets.

The U.S. Weather Bureau station at Willow Run Airport measured one inch of snow between 2 and 7 a.m., and recorded freezing rain and drizzle mixed with snow between 7:30 and 9 a.m.

The snow was expected to increase slightly this afternoon, and then to taper off to flurries late today.
