Seven Michigan Cagers To Play Here Last Time

Wolverines Battle Northwestern •

By Wayne DeNeff

the NCAA bid would be de-
termined by the results of the
Monday game. In the event of
a tie for the championship,
MSU would be the Big Ten's
representative in the tourna-
ment because Michigan played
in the tournament last year.

Tomorrow's game, which
will be regionally televised
and can be 'r" --I in this
area on Chn (WJBK-
TV, Detroit), wiii siart at 4
p.m.

The contest will mark the
end of an era at Yost Field-
house because the seniors are
the men who came here in
1962 and left little doubt that
Michigan basketball truly was
on the upswing.

For the first time in several
years, Coach Dave Strack will
be left with a major rebuild-
ing program for next season
because Darden, Russell, My-
ers, Clawson and Thompson
all have been starters for all
but a fev.

It's Bis "i '»aU that brings
out the best in Darden and,
the 6-7 Detroiter has been a
regular and an outstanding
rebounder for three straight
seasons. Clawson finally got
his chance to start this year
and has been the second lead-
ing scorer with a 16.4 aver-
age. Myers seemed to find
himself in the Far West Clas-
sic and his shooting in recent
games is among the reasons
Michigan is on the verge of
setting new conference marks
in average points per game
and field-goal shooting aver-
age. . ^

Thompson has started most.^
games this season and spark-;

led in a reserve role against
Iowa last Monday.

Brown has appeared in 14
games and Tillotson eight.

Michigan expects no easy
time with Coach Larry Glass'
Wildcats who stand 11-11 on
the season and 6-6 in the Big
Ten and are intent on finish-
ing above .500.

Michigan. Walt Tiberi and
Mike Weaver are the other
starters for a team which has
scored victories over Iowa
and Illinois and had excellent
showings against Vanderbilt
and Kentucky.

While the Michigan-North-

western and Michigan State-
Indiana (3-9) games will be
the big ones on the schedule
tomorrow, Minnesota (7-5) will
be playing at Ohio State (4-8),
Iowa (7-5) at Illinois (7-5) and
Purdue (3-9) at Wisconsin
(4-8).

Michigan will be seeking to
sew up at least a share of the
Big Ten basketball champion-
ship when it takes on North-
western here tomorrow.

The contest will mark the
final home appearance of
seven seniors — Capt. Oliver
Darden, Cazzie Russell, John
Clawson, Jim Myers, John
Thompson, Dan Brown and
Van Tillotson.

VAN TILLOTSON

A victory and Michigan (10-2) would clinch a title share and if Michigan State (9-3) should lose at Indiana, the Wolverines would have the championship free and clear. A loss by Michigan and a triumph by MSU would leave all the chips on the table— the championship and the NCAA Tournament bid—for the batle between the Wolverines and Spartans on Monday night in East Lansuig. If both Michigan and MSU win or both lose, Michigan would have its title share and
