'U' Students Turning In Draft Cards
‘U’ Students Turning In Draft Cards
Seven students and former students of the University who plan to turn in their draft cards following a Day of Resistance protest on the U-M campus, this morning issued the following statement at a press conference in the Michigan Union:
“We the undersigned men of draft age, can no longer tacitly condone, through our cooperation with the Selective Service System, the illegal and oppressive actions taken by our government at home or abroad.
“We, therefore, will not cooperate in anyway with the Selective Service System.”
The seven said they would turn in their draft cards today after the demonstration on the Diagonal.
They are Dennis R. Church, who dropped out of school six months ago to work for the antiwar group called The Resistance; Tom Buk Beukbma, Richard C. Swenson, Darryl Dmytriw, Griffith M. Feeney, James Maloy, Michael R. Husted.
Eleven who previously turned in their draft cards or burned them reaffirmed their position on the Vietnam war by also signing the statement.
One of the signers said the group was not so much concerned with interfering with the Selective Service System as trying to get people to think about what is wrong with American society that results in present U. S. foreign policy.
