M Steams On Unbeaten Toward Big Ten Title

Baseball Schedule Will Get Tougher

By Wayne DeNeff

Although Michigan is perking along toward the Big Ten baseball championship undefeated behind the spectacular pitching of Bob Reed and some lusty hitting, the Wolverines have no easy road to the title.

Their schedule for the final two weekends is a tough one while the slate for undefeated co-leader Ohio State is not as difficult.

Still very much in the running, of course, is Minnesota which also is unbeaten. But the Gophers have a tie on their record leaving them in third place a number of percentage points behind the Wolverines and Buckeyes.

Michigan (7-0) will visit Iowa (3-4) on Friday and play a doubleheader at Minnesota (8-0-1) on Saturday before winding up the regular season in a three-game set with old-rival Michigan State (5-3), which has new hope after sweeping three games last weekend.

Ohio State (5-0) will travel to Illinois (3-4) for a Friday game and then will play a twinbill with last-place Purdue (0-8-1) at West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday. There is no question the Buckeyes will face more severe testing the next weekend at home when they tangle with Minnesota in a single game and then play Iowa twice but the schedule is not as imposing as that of Michigan.

In addition to its double-header with Michigan and single game with Ohio State, Minnesota has a single game with Michigan State Friday and a doubleheader with Indiana (3-3) on the final Saturday of the season.

The hard-throwing Reed is the talk of the conference after adding two more victories last weekend and the way the Wolverines keep pounding the ball is a hot topic, too.

Reed, Flint righthander with fine speed, a good curve and excellent control, defeated Purdue, 7-2, in relief on Saturday after blanking Illinois on Friday for his third shutout in three starts. Michigan defeated Purdue, 9-3, in the opening game of the double-header behind the seven-hit pitching of sophomore lefthander Geoff Zahn.

Reed’s relief triumph over the Boilermakers combined with two relief victories over Wisconsin the previous weekend, gives him credit for six of Michigan’s seven wins.

He has tied the record (held by four others) for most conference victories in one season and also tied the Michigan record (held by Fritz Fisher) for the most triumphs in one campaign. Fisher was 9-1 in his senior year, 1963. Reed, a junior, is 9-1 with four non-conference games still to be played in addition to the six in the league.

Reed has an excellent chance to topple both marks.

Meanwhile, Michigan’s batting average has climbed to .344 following the 25-hit barrage against the Boilermakers.

Catcher Ted Sizemore led the way in the doubleheader, banging out a two-run single in the first game and getting three singles and a triple to drive in three in the nightcap.

Three other Wolverines had four hits for the day — Les Tanona, Keith Spicer and Al Bara. Spicer and Bara each had doubles, driving in three runs and two runs, respectively. Shortstop and captain Bob Gilhooley contributed a pair of doubles and he also drove in three runs.

The Wolverines were robbed of a couple of extra-base hits when centerfielder Gordon Teter, fine Purdue halfback, sprinted back to the fence to pull down long drives.

Michigan Coach Moby Benedict put up quite a protest on a blow by Chan Simonds which Teter caught while crashing over the fence. The umpires ruled a legal out, then a home run and then, finally, a legal out after a lively discussion. Zahn was in command in the opener and the Wolverines made his work easier by hammering starter Mitch Ward for 12 hits and scoring in six different innings. Ward finally gave way to Hank Suerth.

Reed was credited with the second-game victory although he was Michigan’s third pitcher and the Wolverines never trailed.

It was the decision of official scorer Morris Moorwanick who could not give the victory to starter Bill Zepp because he had not pitched the required five innings. Sophomore righthander Larry Guidi came on in relief of Zepp in the fourth inning with two men on and two runs in and the Wolverines leading, 3-2.

Guidi pitched out of the jam but he needed relief help from Reed in the next inning when three of the four batters he faced hit singles. Reed came in and got Carl Schneider on a tap back to the pitcher and then faced only seven men in the final two innings.

Michigan’s record for the season climbed to 18-5 and the Wolverines were in Detroit this afternoon to meet the University of Detroit Titans. Michigan will be at home tomorrow against Western Michigan. Purdue's overall record is 4-13.
