Nuss’ Exam Due Thursday

YPSILANTI—Ralph C. Nuss, O-year-old federal prison supervisor facing arraignment on two charges of murder, is scheduled to be brought before the Ypsilanti Municipal Court next Thursday for examination on one of the charges.

Ypsilanti Municipal Judge Edward D. Deake granted a week’s delay in the start of the examination, which originally was scheduled for today, because Nuss’ family has obtained a lawyer to represent him.

Judge Deake granted the week’s delay at the request of Ann Arbor attorney Henry T. Conlin, who was hired by Nuss’ family to represent him.

Two Ypsilanti law partners, Eugene B. Calder Jr. and John W. Kirkendall, who were appointed a week ago by Circuit Judge William F. Ager Jr. to defend Nuss, when he said he was without funds to defend himself, have withdrawn from the case.

Nuss, a former prisoner employment placement supervisor at the Milan Federal Correctional Institution, is charged in Washtenaw County with the Nov. 10 shooting of Tom D. Brown, 19, of Windsor, Ontario.

He also is charged by federal authorities with the Oct. 16 murder by strangulation of Arland Withrow, 17, of Ypsilanti Township.
