Fleming Thinks Plan For Protest ‘Mistake’
University President Robben W. Fleming considers a proposed “Day of Deliberation” protesting the lifting of graduate student draft deferments a “tactical mistake.
“I will be discussing it with the deans in a meeting next week, but I personally believe it would appear to the public as a special interest plea,” Fleming said today.
Resolutions had been passed this week by the U-M Graduate Student Assembly and Student Government Council calling for suspension of classes for 24 hours beginning at 4 p.m. March 19. Faculty and students would be urged not to meet if the classes were not called off officially.
Fleming has said that he feels the government’s recent withdrawal of deferments for graduate students other than those enrolled in medical and dental schools is unwise in the interests of the country. He feels the “Day of Deliberation,” however, would be looked upon nationally as merely an action of a special interest group looking for self-protection.
The U-M president also commented upon The University'Tif Chicago’s expected withdrawal from the Institute of Defense Analyses (IDA) stating that he too had raised some of the same questions about iDA-university ties. “Although I have looked into this, I have not yet found there is an evil relationship be-tween the universities and IDA,” he said, however.
Fleming, who attended an IDA executive meeting in New York Wednesday, said that reconsideration of IDA structure is already under way, and that he will be presenting a report and recommendations on IDA to the regents at their April 20 meeting.
