Age 67, he was born August 9, 1901, in Logansport, Indiana, the son of George and Jessie Gibson Marshall. On July 19, 1922, he married Lucille A. Watson in Detroit. She survives him. He was graduated from Eastern High in Detroit in 1920. He entered Eastern Mihcigan University in the fall of 1923 where he earned a Life Certificate in 1925. He then taught in the Hamtramck School System before returning to EMU in 1928 to become a freshman track coach. He was graduated from EMU with a BS degree in 1930 and in 1932, he received his MS degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan. He then taught in the Ionia and Detroit School Systems before returning to EMU as trainer and assistant track coach in 1937, where he has been ever since. He was made head track coach during World War II and spent thirty-five years on EMU's coaching staff. During this time, EMU won fourteen IIAC Championships, three Central Collegiate Championships, nine Illinois Tech Relay Championships, and three PAC titles. EMU placed runner-up in NCAA College Division Cross Country in 1965 and won the NAIA Cross Country Championship in 1966. He was the past president of the National Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association and also past president of the Central Collegiates. In 1951, he was selected as the referee of the College Division of the Drake Relays. He was elected to the National Association of Inter-Collegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, May 30, 1968. he was retired from EMU, December 31, 1967. Prof. Marshall was also a member of the Ypsilanti Rotary Club. Survivors besides his wife include: one brother, three sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Moore Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymon B. Bair and the Rev. Lawrence A. Woodruff of the Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti, officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the George Marshall Scholarship Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Friends may call at the Moore Funeral Home from 3 p.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday.
