BATTLE CREEK — You can’t miss 32 of 39 field goal attempts in the first half and expect to win many basketball games.

Huron High learned that lesson the hard way last night as Battle Creek Lakeview, hitting 40 per cent for the night, handed the Ann Arbor visitors their third South Central Conference defeat of the season, 76-63.

It wasn’t the cold night from the field, however, that frustrated Huron High’s victory bid. Despite hitting but five of 24 attempts in the first period and but two of 15 tries in the second eight minutes, Ed Klum’s cagers rallied to narrow the second half deficit to only six points when the penalty whistle removed Huron’s last hope.

Larry Patrick was first to exit via the foul route, two minutes into the last period, but the Green and Gold, hitting a torrid 17 of 35 in the final 16 minutes, trailed by only three fielders when leading scorers Pete Jamison, high for Huron with 25, and Dave Strack, Huron runnerup with 19, fouled out.

Strack was not up to his usually dangerous pace in the first half, scoring but one bucket and a pair of free throws, as a tight Lakeview defense repeatedly denied last year’s leading Huron scorer his favorite outside shot. Strack shook loose for seven field goals after intermission including a driving layup that sliced the gap to 69-63.

That was as close as Huron could come, however, as Dan Frever countered from the lane to give Lakeview, now 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the SCC, eight points of insurance.

Lakeview made it a sweep for the night as the Huron junior varsity, despite a balanced scoring performance, bowed 61-51.
