Whatever Rich Piepenbrink does during the balance of his basketball career at Huron High, and even in years to come, he’ll never forget that free throw he made against Lansing Everett last night.

Piepenbrink scored but one field goal and a charity against the Vikings but it was his conversion from the stripe that gave the Hurons a 51-50 victory after the game had ended.

Both South Central Conference foes “won” and “lost” the game several times in fading moments.

With 2:42 remaining. Larry Brooks’ layup knotted the score at 50-50 but Everett had the chance to play freeze and go for a last-moment shot when the Hurons, now 5-6, turned the ball over with 59 seconds left.

However, the Vikings, who entered the game with an 8-4 mark, were guilty of a three-second violation and with 50 seconds left the Hurons appeared ready to jump from the rear seat to the driver’s seat.

But those last moments were probably the most hectic ever experienced by Ed Klum’s Green and Gold as the near-minute turned into a frantic race which seemingly ended in a 50-50 deadlock.

In the floor-scuffle, however, Viking guard Jeff Burger was called for a foul an instant before the 32 minutes of playing time came to a close. And that violation was followed by Piepenbrink’s charity swisher that gave the Hurons a 2-4 SCC mark and erased the slender title chances of Everett, now 3-3.

It was Pete Jamison, however, who kept Huron in the game. Jamison sparked the Riverside outfit with 11 fielders and a pair of gift shots to lead all scorers with 24 points.

It was his sideliner, 15-footer, and Bucket from the circle which shook Huron from its opening quarter lethargy as the Ann Arborites moved from an 11-8 deficit to an 18-13 lead on a fine tip by Brooks.

An outstanding feed by Dave Hackett led to Jamison’s fourth two-pointer of the second frame and supplied a 22-19 half-time lead.

Everett, however, behind the work of Dave Koshork, reeled off eight points in less than two minutes to open the third period but Jamison’s three-point play tied it at 44-44 with five minutes remaining.

Dave Strack then came up with a steal and an all-the-way layup to put the Hurons up by two but Burger’s circle jumper and a pair from the line by Mark Rittenger put the visitors ahead and set the stage for Huron’s final bucket by Brooks and the Piepenbrink charity which burned down the barn.

Overall, Huron hit 22 of 55 tries for a 40 per cent clip while Everett gunnery, fattened by a sizzling 67 per cent third quarter, stood at 33 per cent Dave Skala connected 15 points for the Hurons jayvees but it wasn’t enough to avoid a 45-43 loss to the Little Vikings.
