SWAMI SEES WIN FOR OL’ PURDUE
By Jerry Liska

CHICAGO(AP)—Big Ten football teams should have stood in their own back yard.
In three rounds of outside play, alien foes pulled the red shirt wool over Big Ten gridiron eyes for a decisive 16-12-1 edge, including a 7-3 margin last Saturday.
As the Big Ten starts its own private warfare with all things being equal, except No. 1 Ohio State, the Midwest Swami peers ahead with a 21-7 record for .750.
Purdue 21, Michigan 18—The winner emerges the chief bidder for the Rose Bowl trip, if not a long-shot hope of later upsetting Ohio State. Any repeat of Michigan’s give-away caper against Missouri will hand Purdue’s Mike Phipps another great day on the target range.
Ohio State 28, Michigan State 18—A few weeks ago this shaped up for a pivotal conference opener with MSU accorded a chance to derail the mighty Buckeyes. But now it appears the Spartans can’t stop Rex Kearn & Co., even with real spears.
Indiana 20, Minnesota 13—Late last season, Minnesota cooled off the Hoosiers 20-6. But Indiana is a lot healthier this time and the winless Gophers won’t have any Colorado snowstorm going for them at Bloomington, Ind.
Iowa 24, Wisconsin 14—One of these Saturdays, Wisconsin’s winless chain—now linked through 23 games—will snap. This, however, doesn’t seem that historic Saturday. Not with Larry Lawrence triggering a Hawkeye attack averaging 35 points in three games.
Illinois 14, Northwestern 13—A battle for the Big Ten cellar with a slim vote going to the less-injured Illini playing at home with Dads’ Day inspiration.
Notre Dame 28, Army 12—Quarterback Joe Theismann found the range and split end Tom Gatewood found the handle in the Irish re-entry into national rating space by pasting Michigan State. The best Cadet showing will be at halftime in Yankee Stadium.
