U BAND TO LEAVE FRIDAY FOR BOWL

It will be off to sunny California on Friday for the University Marching Band to begin an intensive period of rehearsal for appearances in the Tournament of Roses parade and the Rose Bowl game on Jan. 1.

The band, directd by William D. Revelli, will be headquartered at Hedrick Hall on the University of California at Los Angeles campus. Departure on Dec. 26 is set for 4 p.m. from Willow Run Airport with arrival at the Los Angeles airport scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (PST).

Nearly 26 hours of drill on music and formations will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. Rehearsals will continue daily right through Dec. 31 with time off Sunday morning and for a 3 p.m. appearance at Disneyland on Monday, Dec. 29. A joint concert with the U-M Men’s Glee Club will be given in Pasadena’s Civic Auditorium on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 8 p.m.

A New Year’s Eve party is scheduled at UCLA’s Sproul Hall but there will be an 11 p.m. curfew since the bandsmen will have to be up at 6 a.m. Jan. 1 Departure for Pasadena is scheduled at 7:30 a.m. with assembly at the Garfield School in Pasadena at 8:15 a.m. to be ready for the parade at 8:45 a.m.

After the five-mile parade march, the bandsmen will board busses, eat a box lunch and prepare for the pre-game and half-time shows in the Rose Bowl.

After the game, it will be back to Hedrick Hall at UCLA for dinner and then to the airport for a 9 p.m flight to San Francisco. The bandsmen can relax in San Francisco on Friday and Saturday before departing at 11:15 p.m. (PST) for Willow Run Airport where arrival is scheduled for 7 a.m. (EST) on Sunday, Jan. 4.
