Argus Unit
At Dexter
To Close

The photographic service
facility of Argus Inc. at 7220
Huron River Dr., Dexter, will
discontinue operations here as
of Jan. 23, according to Presi-
dent James Coombes. The op-
erations are being transferred
to the firm's Columbia, S. C.,
location "as part of an effort to
consolidate similar or like op-
erations in a continuing effort
to more effectively use the total
capabilities of Argus."

Some of the 40 employes at
the Dexter plant have been giv-
en the opportunity to move to
Columbia, but Coombes said he
was not sure to how many the
offer had been made or how
many had accepted the invita-
tion.

The Argus Optics division
located at 408 Fourth in Ann
Arbor will not be adversely
affected by the company's con-
solidation move, according to
Coombes. In fact, there will be
an expansion of optics opera-
tions in Ann Arbor since some
activities relating to optics are
presently being moved from
Columbia. Furthermore there
will be an announcement of a
new optics program within a
month that as it materializes
should significantly add to th
present employment total oi

Coombes said. "It would
.JL too speculative to discuss
any further details, but we
expect to make a joint
announcement with the other
developing firm very soon."

A new plant presently being
built on a site next to the ser-
vice facility will be the eventu-
al home of the optics division
here. Completion date was
originally set for August of 1969
but "considerable delays due to
problems of the contractors in
providing all the needed facili-
ties have caused the opening
to be delayed indefinitely.
