U-M World’s Fair To Feature Show

Annual Fete To Be Held Jan. 29, 30

Thursday January 21, 1971

An international variety show will highlight the annual University World’s Fair to be held Jan. 29 and 30.

The variety show will feature national folksongs, folk dancing and many special arts performed by U-M international students. Traditional Philippine dance, Bengali folksongs, Thai dancing, Greek dancing, Indian music (both Eastern and American), and a demonstration of Tae Kwon Do, Korean karate, will be among the acts.

“The Fair’s theme this year is ‘International Brotherhood’,” said Lois Maidment, program coordinator for the University’s International Center, “and the foreign students have provided an example of this brotherhood by working closely together to prepare a fair that is truly international in nature.” The students have been working on the fair since early November, she pointed out.

The U-M Residential College (East Quadrangle on E. University) will host the World’s Fair, including the variety show. The Fair will be open from noon to midnight both days. Admission is $1.25 for adults and 50 cents for children.

The variety show will be presented at 2, 3:30, 7 and 9 p.m. on Jan. 29 and 3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m. on Jan. 30. Admission is 50 cents for everyone, except for the 2 and 3:30 an opportunity for citizens shows on Jan. 29, when children will be admitted free.

The World’s Fair provides an opportunity for citizens from different countries to present their cultures in displays of national dress, posters, slide shows and films, samples of national foods, music and national art and handicrafts. Some items, such as Malaysian batik, a fine, specially dyed cotton cloth, Israeli paintings and Malaysian goldpine pineapples, will be for sale.

Proceeds from the fair go to the more than 20 participating U-M nationality clubs and the Foreign Student Emergency Fund.
