Department Heads Approved At University

Three department chairmen and one acting chairman were appointed by the University regents Friday.
All three chairmen are for departments in the College of Engineering: Edward S. Epstein, meteorology and oceanography; William Kerr, nuclear engineering; and Richard E. Young, humanities. Their appointments are effective July 1. Prof. Walter B. Sanders has been named acting chairman of the architecture department in the School of Architecture and Design for the fall term.
Prof. Epstein, who recently was named editor of the Journal of Applied Meteorology, has served as acting chairman of the department in 1969-70. He began his teaching at the U-M in 1961.
Prof. Kerr, who has served as chairman since 1961, was reappointed to the post. He first joined the U-M faculty in 1948 and has an international reputation as an educator and researcher.
Prof. Young, who received a Distinguished Service Award from the College of Engineering in 1968, began teaching in the College as a teaching fellow in English in 1956. He received his PhD. degree from the U-M in 1964.
Prof. Sanders will serve as acting chairman while the current chairman, Prof. Robert C. Metcalf, will be on sabbatical leave. Prof. Sanders served as chairman of the department from 1954-1964.
