County Drug Program Will Be Moved Again

By Glen Harris

(County Government Reporter)

After only four months of existence, Washtenaw County’s hard-drug treatment program will move into its third facility this weekend. It will be moved from the Human Resources Center on the County Farm to space at 219 1/2 E. Washington, above the Fischer Jnoc Co. hardware store.

The move from the Resources Center was necessitated because of lack of heat at the former Medical Care Facility. The boilers there were shut down when the care facility closed last summer, and

due to excessive air pollution from the heating system, the state has forbidden the county from reactivating it.

The treatment program began last June with $111,000 in federal and local funds at 114 N. River in Ypsilanti. But the “Octogon House,” as it was called, was forced to close because the program violated the city’s zoning ordinances. The program was moved to the vacant Resources Center after operating less than two weeks in Ypsilanti.

The move into the Washington St. quarters will be made over the weekend, and the program may resume operation Monday.

When the program started, Community Mental Health Center officials announced plans to locate branches of the treatment center in both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti

But while the Ann Arbor site has been found, the search continues for an appropriate location in Ypsilanti, officials say.

The treatment program includes the use of the drug methadone. When taken regularly, methadone quenches the need for heroin while the client is given other therapy to alleviate the addiction.
