What are the prospects of two more Elliott brothers playing football for Michigan in 1996?
Probably about as remote as the prospects for 1971 were 25 years ago when Bump and Pete Elliott were budding All-Americas for Coach Fritz Crisler in 1946.
Dave and Bruce Elliott are the sons of Pete Elliott, former Michigan quarterback, and they’ll be in action here Saturday against Iowa, whose athletic director is Bump Elliott, former Michigan half-back and coach.
Dave, a 6-2, 200-pound sophomore defensive back, has recovered from a knee injury just in time for the Iowa game and Bruce, a 6-0, 170-pound. senior, is one of the stalwarts of the defensive secondary.
While Bump doesn’t have a son playing Big Ten football just yet, fans will soon be hearing a lot about Bob, former Pioneer High quarterback, who is a regular in the defensive backfield for the Iowa freshmen.
Bump is a year older than Pete and the two grew up together in Bloomington, Ill., where their father, the late Dr. J. Norman Elliott, encouraged them in athletics. They were teammates in grade school and high school and were reunited at Michigan after World War II.
Both went into coaching after illustrious football careers at Michigan and Bump now is in athletic administration and Pete is in private business in Indianapolis. Pete never misses a Michigan game.
It’ll be a memorable reunion here on Saturday when the Elliotts gather for the Michigan-Iowa game.
