Net Rats Edge Adrian
(Special to The News) ADRIAN — The Huron High tennis team finally got down to the business of playing tennis yesterday.
The Net Rats squeezed out a surprisingly narrow 4-3 win over Adrian with an all-male team. Cindy Morris and Emily Barrett, two girls who hope to break the gender barrier in interscholastic sports, sat out the meet rather than have Huron forfeit.
The girls were scheduled to play in Huron's opener at Lansing Harry Hill Wednesday but a South Central Conference ruling the night before made them ineligible and awarded the match to the Panthers.
Coach Jerry Shull and Athletic Director Ed Klum have decided not to play the girls until a court ruling or passage of a bill currently in the state legislature makes it possible for them to compete without incurring more forfeitş.
"I hoped we might be able to do better than that,” said Shull. He didn't think the uproar over the girls' eligibility had anything to do with the sub-par performance.
“We have several kids who haven't had much experience," he said. "They were a little shaky. This was actually our opener, you know."
Shull said there was some hope the girls might be able to play Tuesday when the Hurons are visited by Lansing Everett. “We're hoping we'll be able to use them then," he said. “Their attorney, Lawrence W. Sperling, and the Board of Education attorney are working on an injunction or a restraining order. I won't know anything about the status of that until Monday or possibly even Tuesday."
Still, the Net Rats are 1-0 and that was the most pleasant thing to happen to Shull in weeks. “We got the match and that's what counts,” he said.
