HRP Denies Its Backing Candidates In Primary

The Human Rights Party has announced it is not backing any Democratic candidate in Tuesday’s primary election.

The party, alleging “unscrupulous campaign tactics on the part of certain candidates in the Aug. 8 Democratic primary,” says “Any implication of HRP support by any Democratic primary candidate is totally false.”

Several Democratic contestants for various offices have been indicating they have the support of the HRP.

The announcement also said “Normally, we would not involve the HRP in any way with the primaries of any other party, but we cannot allow the name of our party to be dishonestly used by those who place personal opportunism above political principle.”

It continued, “The Human Rights Party membership has not voted to endorse any of the primary candidates because it is contrary to party policy to endorse candidates of other parties."

Because it is a minor party in the eyes of state law, the HRP can bypass the August primary. All decisions regarding the party’s November ticket will be made at a general membership county convention Aug. 19-20, and at the county caucus Aug. 24.
