Town Club Offered Use Of Barton Hills

While the burned-out Town Club is being reconstructed on the present site at 210 W. Washington, the Barton Hills Country Club has extended an invitation to the 1,700 members to use the dining and banquet facilties of Barton on a temporary basis.

A reasonable completion date has been set for March 1, 1974. “It is our intention, however, to improve on that if at all possible,” said Michael Rabat, general manager of the Town Club, a private dining club.

Fire early August 20 after the club was closed extensively damaged the building, which has been at its present location since 1956. Prior to that, the 30 year-old club was located in the former Allenel Hotel, which was located at E. Huron and S. Fourth Ave. where the Ramada Inn Downtown now is.

The heaviest damage was to the club’s dance floor and dining room area, where the roof caved in. Heat, smoke and water also damaged the kitchen, lounge, service area and office.

The damage estimate is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. Investigators for the Ann Arbor Fire Department believe the blaze may have been caused by an electrical malfunction near the bandstand at the rear of the main dining room..
