What Is And Was

A new parking lot exclusively for downtown business employes (top picture) was opened last week at a W. William and S. First, site, the former location of the Feiner Glass building (bottom picture taken in December). Only a few cars have used the lot so far but all 75 spaces are expected to be leased by the end of the month, according to Guy Larcom, executive director of the Ann Arbor Development Council. Local banks loaned $18,000 to the council which paid the city to demolish the former structure and grade the parking lot. The agreement between the downtown redevelopment organization and the city is for two years. What happens after that depends on what long-term uses are designated for this piece of city land as well as other government owned parcels in the downtown area. Larcom said the project serves a twofold purpose: (1) it improves a former eyesore and (2) it provides lower cost parking. The rate is $11 a space per month.
