'Crater’ Filled In To Mark War’s End

A simulated bomb crater, dug almost three years 'ago to protest the Vietnam War, has been filled in — the war is over.

The crater was dug in front of a Rainbow Peoples’ Party house on Hill Street on July 4, 1972. The sign erected next to the crater stated that it symbolized "The death and destruction caused by U.S. bombs to the people of Indochina.”

The 20-foot wide, four-foot-deep crater was to be filled in when the war ended.

Filling in of the crater took place Sunday during a ceremony celebrating the war’s end. Local activists and supporters participated in the celebration.

“It was a two-pronged victory celebration” a spokesman said. “We celebrated the victory of the Vietnamese in reclaiming their homeland and the victory of the American anti-war movement.”

The celebration included the planting of a tree and flowers on the spot of the filled-in crater.

About 75 persons attended the- event, including Ann Arbor Oity Council members James Ken worthy, Elizabeth Taylor and Carol Jones, and Washtenaw County Cmsr. Catherine McClary.
