Associate Dean For Graduate School OKd

Dr. Nellie. M Varner, director of the Affirmative Action Programs and assistant professor of political science at the U-M, will become associate dean of the U-M's Graduate School.

Her appointment, effective Jan. 1, was approved by the Regents on Friday. She will divide her time equally between the Graduate School and the political science department during the fall and winter terms, and give full time to the Graduate School during the spring-summer term.

“Dr. Varner’s administrative experience equips her admirably for the position of associate dean of the Graduate School,” said Alfred S. Sussman, dean of the Graduate School, and Frank H. T. Rhodes, U-M vice-president for academic affairs.

“In this role,” they said, “she will have primary responsibility for providing leadership and guidance in furthering the well-being and welfare of all graduate students in respect to financial aid, counseling and all rights and benefits of graduate study.

“Attention will be directed to the recruitment, enrollment and academic needs of minority, women and part-time students in particular.”

Dr. Varner was named in 1972 as director of the U-M’s Office of Affirmative Action Programs, which aids in increasing the number and job level of women and minority U-M employees.

Dr. Varner-joined the U-M faculty in 1968 after receiving her Ph.D. degree in the U-M department of political science. She is a specialist in Soviet affairs and international relations. She is a faculty associate with the U-M’s Center for Russian and East European Studies.
