The woman instrumental in starting the "story hour" at the Ann Arbor Public Library died Tuesday.
Hazel M. Keedle, a life-long city resident, lived at 1200 Earhart and died after a two-week illness.
Miss Keedle was employed as librarian at the Children's Room at the library for 42 1/2 years, retiring in 1965.
At the time of her retirement, Miss Keedle said one of the great satisfactions of her job had been "finding just the right book" to change a reluctant reader to an enthusiastic one.
As part of her effort to encourage reading, she was instrumental in establishing "story hour," bringing together youngsters to hear stories read to them.
Miss Keedle was a member of the American Library Association; Michigan Library Association; Emeritur Club and the Alumni Association of the U-M; the National retired Teachers' Association; and the American Association of Retired Persons.
She also was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the King's Daughters.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. William Keedle of Dearborn; one nephew, two nieces, one great nephew and four great nieces; and several cousins.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Muehlig Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Maitland officiating.
