Mitchell, Mary D.

Age 96, passed away Saturday, March 19, 1977 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. Born February 3, 1881 in Prattville, Michigan, she was the daughter of Edward and Mary Ett Brewster. Mrs. Mitchell had been an Ann Arbor resident for the past 60 years. On August 14, 1911 she married Thomas E. Mitchell; he died March 21, 1944. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the First Congregational Church; a former teacher in the Detroit and Dexter Public Schools; a teacher for many years in the Ann Arbor Public School system. The Mary D. Mitchell School was named in her honor. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include: three sons, William B. of Oxnard, California, Thomas E. of South Lyon, Mich.; and Dwight B. of Pinckney, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Otis (Elizabeth) Clipper of Mason, Mich. and Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Horning of Ann Arbor; twenty-two grandchildren; and thirty great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Muehlig Chapel with Rev. Terry N. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church. Friends may call at the chapel beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
