Woody Herman will swing one for Greenhills

STILL SWINGIN’ — Nostalgia will be the order of the evening when long-time jazz great Woody Herman and his band appear here at a scholarship gala for Greenhills School on May 5.

The Greenhills Scholarship Gala, the major fund-raising event for the private school's scholarship program, will be held on Friday, May 5, in the Michigan League Ballroom, 227 S. Ingalls St.

Woody Herman, in his fortieth year as a bandleader, and his band will play at the event from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The evening will begin with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at 7, followed by a buffet dinner from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Located in northeast Ann Arbor, Greenhills School is an independent coeducational day school for 280 students enrolled in grades 7 through 12. Its curriculum is college preparatory in nature.

Established in 1968, the school is fully accredited both by the U-M’s Bureau of School Services and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States.

The school’s scholarship program is financed solely from funds raised for or contributed to the program on an annual basis. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need and personal and academic promise. In the current academic year, 39 students, roughly divided among the six grades, receive modest to full scholarship assistance.

Joann Gargaro is general chairman of the May 5 event. She is assisted by Pat McConnell, finance and co-chairman; Ann Clark, invitations and reservations; Ann McDonald, art coordination; Charlene and Marvin Schrock, auction; Fran Bolhouse, decorations.

Also assisting are Jeanette Middleton, League arrangements; Mary Kay Gray, publicity and communications; Ann Edwards, program; Lois Stegman, Rosalie Edwards, Nan Conlin and Nancy Judge, advisory and promotion; Patricia Lewis, mailing list and advisory; and Laura Todd, patron drawing gift and advisory.

Reservations, which must be made by April 28 for the event, are limited. Tickets will be held at the door, not mailed.

Patron tickets are available at $50 a person. All ticketholders may particiter a special drawing during the evening for a video cassette recorder and player system.

General admission tickets are $25 a person. All ticketholders nat oarticipate in an auction which will also be held during the evening.
