Christians Protest Nazis With Stars

On Sunday and Monday, June 25 and 26 many Christians. Unitarians, and others in the area will wear the yellow Star of David as a protest against the rising tide of antisemitism. racism, and the persecution of minorities.

The time is chosen because of the announced intention of the Nazi Party to hold a march in Skokie. Ill., on June 25. Skokie has a significant Jewish population, including many persons who lived through the Nazi death camps in the 1940’s.

In a search to respond from their own faith to the rising evidence of Nazism and its anti-semitic line, local members of non-Jewish religions have recalled the response of the Danish people under Nazi occupation in World War II. The Danes established an exceptional record for hiding and assisting Jews to escape. At the suggestion of their king and church, Christian Danes took to wearing the yellow star of David which Jews were forced to wear, thus expressing their identification with persecuted brothers and sisters.

Last minute court action or a change of plans by the Nazi Party could bring about a cancellation or postponement of their planned march. The demonstration of solidarity against racism here will take place in any event.

Sponsors of the local project include the Interfaith Council for Peace, the Division of Mission of Memorial Christian Church and Clergy Working for Social Justice. Members of the Jewish Community Council have expressed their appreciation of the effort and are asking their people to also wear the yellow Star for these two days.
