Multi-service center given push

YPSILANTI - The Ypsilanti Community Services Agency again went on record Monday as wanting to do whatever it can to see that a multi-service center is built on the city’s south side.

Nancy Margolis, CSA deputy director, told City Council that present conditions at Parkridge Community Center on Harriet Street 'are not adequate for any centralized services. “The place has tremendous limitations and it would be too expensive in the long run to sink money into it,” she said.

Presently, city administrators are studying whether to try to float a municipal bond issue -probably over $2 million - to finance the construction of a new community center which would be located on the south side.

City Manager Stephen Shutt said that current federal funds to be spent on Parkridge have not been used while a planning study is being done. Several months ago the city received $250,000 in grants from the Small Cities program and $50,000 from Community Development Block Grand funding.

Margolis said different agencies and programs such as Head Start, Foster Grandparents and home heating assistance, would be located in the center.
