Two deans get terms extended

University of Michigan regents approved extending the terms of two deans and the promotion of an assistant to an associate vice president at their monthly meeting Friday.

Robert C. Metcalf received reappointment as dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning for an additional three years; George V. Bayliss will continue as dean of the School of Art for another three-year term; Thomas G. Easthope was named associate vice president for student services after having served as assistant vice president.

Metcalf, whose new term will run from July 1981 through June 1984, received a bachelor of architecture degree from the U-M in 1950 and joined the faculty in that year as a part-time instructor while continuing in private practice. He became an assistant professor in 1959, associate professor in 1963 and professor in 1968.

METCALF WAS appointed chairman of the college in 1968 and has served in this position until the present time.

Metcalf was appointed by Gov. Milliken to the Michigan Board of Registration for Architects in1975 and is currently serving as chairman after stints as secretary and vice chairman.

Recently he was appointed by Mayor Louis Belcher to the Energy Steering Committee of the City of Ann Arbor.

Bayliss, whose new term will continue from July 1981 through June 1984, received a bachelor of arts degree in fine arts and economics from the University of Maryland and a master of fine arts form the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

HE JOINED THE university’s faculty in 1972 as professor and chairman of the department of art. He has been dean of the School of Art since 1976.

Easthope has served as assistant vice president for student services since October 1972.  He is responsible for budgetary and personnel aspects of the Office of Student Services.

U-M regents appointed him associate vice president in recognition of added responsibilities and efforts in administering the student services office.

The University will not fill the position created by Easthope's promotion.
