English professor gets Russel honor

The U-M's Henry Russel Award this year will be presented to

Gayl A. Jones, an assistant professor teaching in the English department and the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies.

The annual award, which carries a $1,200 stipend, is given to a younger member of the faculty for scholarly achievement and promise.

The award will be presented March 17 in the U-M Rackham Amphitheatre, followed by the annual Henry Russel Lecture given by a senior member of the faculty. This year’s lecturer is Leslie Kish, professor of sociology and research scientist in the Institute for Social Research.

Jones, who holds a doctorate in creative writing from Brown University, joined the U-M faculty in 1975 as a visiting lecturer in English and in 1976 was named assistant professor.
