Strike continues to delay community center opening

YPSILANTI - The opening of the Parkridge Community Center on the city’s south side is continuing to be delayed because of a strike by sheet metal workers.

Originally, the facility was expected to be completed by June 30. The strike has been under way since early June.

Suzanne Remien/Fejes, acting director of the Community Development Department, said she doesn't know how soon the center will open because of the strike. Although most of the building has been completed, the only work remaining is installing the duct work for the heating and air conditioning systems, she said.

Meanwhile recreational activities scheduled to be held at the center are being conducted at other city facilities.

Construction on the $400,000 project began last fall. The venture is being financed with federal funds from the Community Development Block Grant program. The project includes a 2,600 square foot addition and renovation of the present center located at W. Harriet and Armstrong Streets.
