Pearson pleads not guilty in fatal Faber shooting

Machelle Yvonne Pearson, 17, of Ypsilanti, the accused killer of Ann Arbor speech therapist Nancy Faber, formally pled not guilty Monday in her Circuit Court arraignment before Judge William Ager on charges of murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm.

Pearson, represented by Washtenaw County Public Defender Barry Gates, continues to be held without bond in the Washtenaw County Jail.

A pretrial hearing before Circuit Judge Ross W. Campbell has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, with a tentative trial date set for 9 a.m. Monday, April 30, before Campbell.

Faber, 39, the wife of Ann Arbor News editorial writer and columnist Don Faber, was fatally shot during a robbery after she left the Kroger Store in the Plymouth-Green Shopping Center.

In a taped statement admitted as court evidence, Pearson confessed to the slaying but claimed that it was accidental. She said she had been beaten by boyfriend Richardo Hart, who handed her the gun and forced her to rob Faber.

Hart, 20, of Superior Township, also is being held without bond on identical murder, robbery and possession of a firearm charges.
