Hayward named top senior athlete

Michigan baseball players Ken Hayward and Mike Ignasiak and Wolverine softball player Lisa Panetta have been singled out for special honors.

Hayward, first baseman and pitcher who is zeroing in on a number of Michigan career records, was named last night Michigan's "Senior Athlete of the Year" by Bob Ufer Quarterback Club.

Ignasiak, freshman pitcher who won two games and saved a third in the weekend series with Michigan State, was named Big Ten player of the week by the Big Ten office in Chicago.

And Panetta, senior shortstop who had seven hits, including three triples in the Wolverines' four-game sweep over Ohio State, was named Big Ten player of the week for women.

The Bob Ufer Award winner is selected by a vote of Michigan lettermen.

Hayward, who currently is hitting .423 and has eight home runs, needs to play in just four more games to become Michigan's all-time leader in games played.  He has appeared in 218 and the record, held by Jeff Jacobson, is 221.

Four more runs batted in and Hayward will become Michigan's all-time RBI leader.  Hayward has 180 and the record, held by Jim Paciorek, is 183.

Hayward has 28 home runs and the record, held by Paciorek, is 32.  The big first baseman from Pontiac has scored 159 runs and the record is Paciorek's 162.

Ignasiak, from Anchorville, advanced his record to 6-1 with the victories over Michigan State and he has thrown two of the team's four shutouts.

Panette, from St. Clair Shores, batted in five runs in the series with the Buckeyes.  Her three triples advance her total to 10, a new Michigan single-season record.  She also holds the record for career triples, 22.

Playing in her final home game at Michigan, Panetta came to bat in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on and two outs, and Michigan down by a run.  She slammed a triple, clearing the bases and giving the Wolverines the victory.
