Wells, Mrs. Carlton F. (Cecilia D.)
Died September 13, 1986 at the University Hospital. She was born July 23, 1904 in Lublin, Poland and came to the University of Michigan in 1924. She was married to Carlton F., Professor Emeritus Dept. of English at the UofM, February 11, 1927 in Ann Arbor; he survives. Mrs. Wells was a member of the First Congregational Church. From 1929 until 1934, she was an assistant in the Polish Language Dept. of Slavik languages at the University of Michigan. Mrs. Wells was a member of the Faculty Womens Club: the Art History and the Great Books groups. In the late 1920's, she helped establish the Polish Student Society at the University. Besides her husband, Carlton, she is survived by a daughter, Eugenia E. McGaw of Hanover, New Hampshire; a son, Jan P. Wells of E. Calais, Vermont; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Helen D. Travis of Ann Arbor. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Wells Usher, MD in 1955 and a son, Lt. Robert D. Wells USNA in 1971. Private interment has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 17, at 4pm. the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Terry N. Smith officiating. Memorial contributions may be made, in her name, to the Congregational Church or a charity of one's choice.
