Engineers give dam landmark status

Ann Arbor’s Barton Dam and Powerhouse complex has been recognized as a civil engineering landmark - one of only three in Michigan - by the state chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Barton Dam was refitted to produce hydroelectric power earlier this year.

The dam and powerhouse, designed by the late Gardner Williams and built in 1912, are notable for their “barrel arch” construction, according to City Engineer William Wheeler. “It’s one of the best examples of that construction,” Wheeler said.

The other civil engineering landmarks in Michigan are the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and a hydroelectric plant in Sault Ste. Marie.
